The Story
Around 2006 I bought what at the time seemed like something from Star Trek. A flip phone! It was great till I dropped it while walking across the Manhattan Bridge to my studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The case cracked and made me think there has to be some way to protect this thing.
I had metal working experience with sheet aluminum, so I bought a cheap finger metal brake and began making rudimentary covers for the cracked flip phone. They were light weight folded pieces of regret. They were horrible. I made a bunch of them. None worked very well.
My roommate was into technology and bought one of the original iPhones in 2007. It was really different! The new iPhone was way beyond a flip phone.
I kept making various designs out of aluminum for my next flip phone. These were better. By chance I encountered a computer assembly that used stacked circuit boards with long screws and spacers holding it together and it gave me an idea for a new direction for my cases.
I started making cases for my friend's smart phones for brands like Motorola, Blackberry and Apple iPhones. The iPhone cases stuck. People liked the anodized finishes and the rubber linings for drop protection. They worked. In 2010 Specialized Composites was launched as a way to make my iPhone cases available to everyone.
For 15 years I have continued to improve the designs using the latest technology to make the best rugged iPhone cases available.
